Should you work with every freelance client who offers you a gig? If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know the answer to this question: No.

One of the biggest challenges for people who are ready to make that jump from working for a few months or even a year as a freelancer to becoming more advanced and bringing on bigger and better clients is the idea of when to turn prospective clients down.

Now, when it comes to picking and choosing freelance clients, people who are just starting their freelance career are in a totally different position than someone who is advanced and has more experience negotiating and working with free clients. As freelancers and entrepreneurs, we usually have tons of ideas and want to work on many different things. But, in the words of Steve Jobs,

“People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”

The same is true when it comes to picking the projects you work on and the clients you work with.
